Sister Band Takes Flight

In 2008, Party on the Moon (POTM) was growing by leaps and bounds. “People would ask me if my band was open and when I said, ‘no,’ they wanted me to recommend another band,” said Dennis Smith, POTM band leader. “At the time, there were no similar bands to ours, so I knew I needed to create a sister band to meet the demand.”

With POTM’s reputation on the line, Dennis knew he had to partner with someone special to create and lead the new band. Ronnie Garrett, Tyler Perry’s musical director, came highly recommended by several sources on both a regional and national level, so Dennis and Ronnie met and Simply Irresistible was born.

The owners of National Party Bands, who manage Party on the Moon, Big Swing and the Ballroom Blasters, Jessie’s Girls, Big Blast and the Party Masters, Life of the Party and Celebration Club began to develop a brand and direction for the band. And Dalton Marketing Group was once again engaged to help with the name, logo and website.

At the same time, we worked on recruiting talent. Recording or touring with superstars such as Elton John, Beyonce, Lionel Richie, Aretha Franklin, Paula Abdul, Jennifer Holiday and Phillip Bailey, Ronnie was well plugged into the national act-caliber musician scene. He worked closely with Dennis to hand pick the best musicians and singers to create a unique band that shared the best qualities of POTM – great singers, musicians and singers who are nice and have the ability to play nonstop all night.

While touring with Toni Braxton, Ronnie met her sister Trina, a lead vocalist who helped Ronnie put together the front line: four female vocalists and a male vocalist were chosen. (Trina also toured with the band until her career launched in 2011.) A strong rhythm section was also recruited including lead guitar, drums, keyboards and, of course, Ronnie on bass. The core band was created with an option to add a Grammy award-winning four-piece horn section.

Ronnie rehearses the band weekly and uses his accomplishments, including more than 20 Gold Albums, as motivation for the members. “If I can do it, so can SI,” said Ronnie.

Starting his own band was not the easiest choice for Ronnie. He could have continued to play with major national acts around the world and had the easy life. Yet, he chose to embark on a new venture all his own.

In October of 2008, the band performed their first show ironically with Party on the Moon at a wedding in Savannah, GA. Both bands were a huge success! Now playing tons of successful shows a year, Dennis is proud to call Simply Irresistible his sister band.

“I’m very proud to report Simply Irresistible has become one of the premier bands in the country and they perform worldwide. I would have never imagined such quick success for them. It is truly an honor to be involved with such a talented group of musicians,” exclaimed Dennis.
